How to Convert Your Sweat into Electricity

What if I told you that you could walk on a treadmill for 5 hours a day to generate power for someone else’s business? Would that be something you’d be interested in?

There’s a new workout center in Portland called the Green Microgym that is using the energy generated by exercise bikes and treadmills to keep the lights on. It’s hoping to eventually combine human-generated electricity with solar power to take the gym completely off the grid.

I poke fun at this idea, but it’s actually really cool and innovative. It’s not really costing the members of the gym anything extra; in fact, if anything, it may decrease their membership fees.

I’ve always thought it would be nice to have some sort of electricity-generating foot petal to use while I’m at my desk. I’m sitting down at my desk getting absolutely no exercise for about 6 hours a day–why not have a device to help me move a little and cut the electric bill at the same time?
