Pet Please #22: The Parking Spot No One Else Knows About

Do you have a destination in your area that you visit regularly where parking is difficult? Where people always arrive at the destination and complain about finding a parking spot? But you smile to yourself as they complain. Because there is a parking spot that no one else knows about, and you just parked there.

This makes me immensely happy.

I have a few spots like this in St. Louis. One is a curb in the Central West End that looks like it’s too small for a car, but it’s actually plenty big enough. At one point in history this curb had yellow paint on it, but that paint has long since worn off. I’ve parked there dozens of times and only been ticketed once.

I also have a spot near the UMB Bank Pavilion (an open-air concert area) that lets me avoid all parking fees and avoid outgoing traffic after the concert.

Do you have a parking spot that no one else knows about? On a scale from one to eleven, how much joy does it bring you?

  1. I can’t think of a specific spot, but I drive a tiny car that allows me to park in many places that are off-limits to those with vans, SUVs, or even normal-sized cars. I can zip into a space where some jackass is halfway over the line and no one else can park there, and I still have room to open my door plenty wide. I can park in the spaces that aren’t really spaces, they’re just leftover room before you get to the curb because someone didn’t do their division correctly. It’s fun to watch people’s faces when they see me slide into these kind of spaces.

    • Ha ha…this made me smile. You sound so proud of your little car! Do you do a little dance when you step out of the car after pulling into a really small space?

      • As a fellow small car owner and enthusiast, I would echo Anne’s comment regarding our ability to park anywhere. I sometimes wish I drove a smart car so I could go even further and park perpendicular to the curb.

In response to your “formerly yellow painted curb” solution – I also once received a ticket for parking in such a spot. I contested it, and won. 🙂

    • I have the opposite gift, in that with my SUV, there are spots that I can utilize. My example is at a local 3:00 pub. They have a rather small and very poorly designed parking lot, but a section on the curb under some telephone poles deep enough for SUVs just pop in and out as they see fit. It’s not a secret, but it’s not accessible to low-riding sports cars and the wee little rice burners.
