My Greatest Fear #14: Eyeball Papercuts

I love to drive with the windows down. I don’t use the AC often because a nice breeze is about 10x better.

However, I only roll down the two windows in the back of my Camry and the passenger window. The reason? It’s not about the hair.

I’m afraid that something will sail into my window and slice my eye.

Really.

Now, I understand that the chances of happening are slim to none, especially if I’m wearing sunglasses. But this is how irrational fears work. If there’s the slightest chance for something to happen and you have the ability to reduce that possibility, you will. At least, I will.

I've always wanted to wear one of these suits.

There’s a line in Dumb and Dumber that illustrates this point (this is somewhat paraphrased).

Lloyd: What do you think the chances of a guy like you and a girl like me… ending up together?

Mary: Not good. I’d say like… one out of a million.

Lloyd: So you’re telling me there’s a chance!

Also, in my defense, I have actually had my eye sliced by an unseen object. It happened while walking down a blustery London street a few years ago. I don’t know what it was, but it hurt quite a bit, and I could barely see out of that eye for a day or two.

Am I alone in this fear or can anyone relate?

  1. I can relate somewhat, because I have worn glasses since I was three. I have always hated things flying at my head in general, but anywhere near my eyes, and I always thought my glasses were going to bust on my face. I only just got contacts a few years ago, and what am I wearing now? My glasses. My eyes feel naked without the shield. I do drive with my windows down, but when I’m outside doing yard work, I’m squinting even with glasses on. I’ve had a fingernail shard, and something from the yard fly up and hit my eyeball AROUND my glasses. It can happen. Luckily, I’ve never had anything serious injure an eye. I would much rather be deaf than blind, so that gives a hint on how I try to protect my eyes. I’ll never forget playing in the yard when I was about 9 and a yellow jacket landed on the top of my glasses. I froze, hoping it would fly away. The little bugger actually starting crawling down the inside of my glasses! I threw my glasses off my face and ran. That still gives me the shivers. Bottom line, you’re not alone.

  2. I feel like we have talked about this in the past, because I have the EXACT SAME fear. But I feel like I heard it somehwere, and it just sounded so horiffic that it bacame one of my biggest fears (short of comunists, dying alone, and now bees inside my glasse!).

But when my father was in high school in the 60s, he used to install after-market car air conditioners. While grinding one day, he got a steel splinter in his eye, and he lived to tell the tail. So maybe this worry is all for naught.

  3. So I don’t know why, but I have this HUGE fear of getting a paper cut on my eyeball. I think it was because once when I was like four I had a dream about getting a paper cut on my eyeball. Does anyone know what a dream like that means?

Does anyone know what a dream like that means? I’ve googled it, but found very few answers. I’ll keep you posted if I find anything.
