My 10 Most Anticipated Movies of 2013

My apologies for the brief absence on the blog. I’ve been busy with family Christmases (which have delightfully included Biddy taking a massive dump on my parents’ couch–an act of defiance that he’s only done four times ever–and Walter using his recently clipped claws to ruin an antique carpet. Sounds like he finally wants to be declawed…). But I’m back.

In no particular order, I present to you my 10 most anticipated movies of 2013. It looks to be a fantastic year in film.

  • Iron Man 3: Iron Man is my favorite live-action super hero movie. Also the sequel was a bit of a letdown, I still can’t wait for Part 3.
  • The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug: I loved The Hobbit way more than I thought I would, mainly because it used ancillary material from the book’s appendices to truly make it feel like part 1 of an epic trilogy.
  • Man of Steel: Superman done right? I sure hope so. All of the previous movies–and I mean ALL of them–were a letdown for me.
  • Anchorman: The Legend Continues: Finally.
  • Monsters University: After The Incredibles, Monsters Inc is my favorite Pixar movie. It’ll be tough for this one to match the creativity and the emotional resonance of the original, but I have faith.
  • Oblivion: I didn’t think much of this sci-fi flick until I watched the trailer about five times. It’s stunning, and I hope it has a story to match the visuals.
  • Gatsby: Baz Luhrman + a classic American novel + amazing actors + awesome music = I want to go to there.
  • Ender’s Game: If it’s done right, this could easily end up at the top of my list. I’ve been waiting to see the zero-gravity game on the big screen ever since I read the first novel.
  • Star Trek Into Darkness: I’m a Star Wars guy, not Star Trek, but I thought the first reboot was pretty good. However, it felt a little too much like it was simply about passing on the baton to a new generation of Trekkies. Now that the baton has passed, I’m expecting something amazing.
  • Pacific Rim: I’m a sucker for giant robots and huge monsters. From what I hear, Pacific Rim has those in spades, in addition to a few great concepts that will make us care and root for the humans involved.

What are you looking forward to seeing in 2013?

  1. My list of movies is pretty similar, but I’d add Jurassic Park 3D (even though I usually am not a huge fan of 3D, I’m curious to see if they’ll be able to pull it off and make one of my favorite movies better), Catching Fire, and possibly the GI Joe sequel. Looks like I’ll probably need to setup a new savings account just for all of the movie tickets I’ll be buying in 2013. 🙂

    • Katy–Good call on Catching Fire. I somehow forgot about that one. I almost put Jurassic Park 3D on this list, but it didn’t quite make the top 10.

      Ansley–That would be great!

  2. I am looking forward to the buddy cop movie starring Mark Wahlberg and Channing Tatum. It’ll happen. Trust me. Also, we need one in which Denzel and Liam finally determine who is the 60 year old alpha male.

    • Here’s how you do it: Denzel and Liam play life partners whose daughter (Kristen Stewart) gets captured but Tunisian terrorists. They break all manner of laws in their pursuit, so they end up being chased by the good cop/bad cop combo of Wahlberg and Tatum. Eventually they all team up against the terrorists (Ben Kingsley and femme fatale model-turned-actress Porsche van Greten), and the movie ends in a Saw-inspired last-man-standing fight to the death between Denzel and Liam.
