Fight Club Returns

Fight ClubI was going to do a “pet please” entry about this, but this is well beyond a pet please. This is like if pet please #1 (the Amazon.com smiling box) and pet please #2 (back-to-back parking spaces) had a baby together. I’m not sure what that baby would look like…maybe an Amazon box the size of two parking spaces? Or a big parking space with a smile painted on it?

Anyway, this is the important part: Chuck Palahniuk is writing a sequel to Fight Club. Maybe even sequels.

Mind. Blown.

To give you some context, Fight Club is my #1 favorite movie. Period. I remember watching it as a freshman at Wash U back in 1999. It was my first time off campus. The movie had been in theaters for over a month, so it had been relegated to one of the smaller screens at the Esquire. But it didn’t matter. The movie hit me harder than a Tyler Durden punch to the gut and has stayed with me ever since.

Interestingly, Palahniuk is writing a graphic novel, not a regular old novel without pictures. Up until about a week ago that might have been a disappointment for me. I’ve read Sandman and Watchmen and was, of course, quite impressed, but for some reason the medium has never appealed to me in the way that other novels have. I think I like to picture things for myself.

But then I read this article about a graphic novel called Saga. I bought it and loved it and can’t wait for the next edition. And then when it was announced yesterday that the next Superman movie will be a Superman-Batman crossover movie (that was amazing news too), someone recommended that I read Frank Miller’s graphic novel The Dark Knight Returns, and the reviews made me want it immediately. So I’m coming around to the format.

Regardless, I can’t wait to see what the Fight Club sequel graphic novel looks like. I really, really can’t wait.

Where do you stand on Fight Club? Is this something that excites you too?

  1. I had no idea you were a Fight Club fanatic! I’d classify myself as neutral on the movie, and I haven’t read the novel, but I do enjoy that so many people love it.

My real comment, though, is on your pet peeve and pet please blog entries. I clicked through and learned that you started the pet pleases after someone pointed out that you were complaining a lot with your pet peeves. Do you realize that you now have nearly twice as many pet pleases as pet peeves?! Way to turn that frown upside-down!

    • That’s a keen observation, Carole. I think part of it is that I only try to write about amusing pet peeves. Anyone can grumble and complain online, but that’s not entertaining or insightful. But for the most part, there are a lot more things that make me happy than those that frustrate me, hence the imbalance in the lists.
