Better Than Flying Cars

Note 1: The subject of this entry is misleading. Flying cars are the best kind of cars. How on earth is it 2013 and we’re still limited by roads?! There’s so much space directly above the read that we aren’t using AT ALL. It doesn’t make sense that we aren’t using all of our resources to make flying cars possible TODAY. And not the kind with wings. The Back to the Future kind with retractable wheels and anti-gravity. Seriously. Make it happen. I wants it.

Note 2: Also not better than what I’m about to write about: Autonomous cars. Why would I drive to work if my car could drive for me while I read a book or take a shower in my built-in car shower (patent pending)?

Note 3: Could I write a blog entry that consists entirely of notes? I think it’s happening right now. It’s really happening.

See Through System an overtaking assistance system YouTubeNote 4: Okay, what is almost as good as flying cars and autonomous cars? THIS.

Note 5: Don’t want to click on a random link? I understand. The thing I’m so excited about is a piece of technology that would let you see THROUGH the car in front of you. Or, more likely, the giant Ford Explorer that is blocking your vision in a traffic jam. All you want to know is if the stoppage is due to a zombie invasion. That’s all. But you can’t get out of your car to look, obviously.

Note 6: Wait, how can you see through a car? Did we capture Superman and dissect him for his X-ray vision? Is this like those cameras Sony recalled a few years ago that can see through clothing? I hope there’s an app for that now.

Note 7: To answer the question presented in Note 6, I give you this: All vehicles would be equipped with a front-facing camera, a wireless transmitter/receiver, and video screen projected onto the windshield. If you want to see what’s in front of the giant vehicle in front of you, activate your projection to see.

Note 8: That seems like a lot of technology to be added to every car.

Note 9: True. And I’m sure some people would refuse to adapt the technology, stating privacy reasons and Obamacare. But if the car companies got behind the idea and people could opt into it, it could be pretty cool.

Note 10: What if you hacked into your car’s wireless transmitter so it only shared video clips from the movie Independence Day of aliens swooping towards the car behind you?

Note 11: That would be awesome.

Note 12: Yeah it would.

Note 13: Still not as awesome as flying cars, though.

  1. Note 1: Really love the notes format.
Note 2: I see 3 potential uses for this:

    1) Watching ahead for potential accidents, to avoid multi-car pile ups. It makes sense to me, that you might be able to react and brake faster if you were watching ahead of the car in front of you.

    2) The most expensive way ever to be more effectively nosy about why traffic is happening, ie the zombie apocalypse.

    3) The very specific circumstance they show in the video – trying to pass a large vehicle on a curvy, 2-lane road with low visibility (how often is this happening?).

Note 3: Forgive me, but this seems like one of those things that is SO COOL and exists for the sake of being cool but doesn’t actually seem necessary/worth the cost.

Note 4: I also see a problem: Are we seriously to believe that we should not text or even CALL someone while driving but looking at a separate screen is okay? Does this not seem distracting/dangerous trying to drive for 2 cars?

Note 5: Should I just shut up and go “oooh neato!”? I think maybe I should.

    • Emma–Watching ahead for accidents would be extremely useful. However, as you say, as cool as the technology is, I don’t know if it would be completely justified to adapt on a large scale (and it wouldn’t work on a small scale). Plus, if autonomous cars work out, this won’t be needed at all.

As for texting vs. looking at the projected screen, I think there’s a difference. It would be less disruptive than glancing at a rear-view mirror.

  2. My mom always says she’s disappointed in technology because she was told as a kid that we’d have flying cars, teleportation, and instead of food we’d take a “nutrition” pill each day. Nothing will impress her until those things happen, even cars that can see through other cars. I’m impressed, though!
