Which Animated Movie Villain Scared You the Most as a Kid?

garfield-halloween-2This is completely random, but today I saw the new poster for Angelina Jolie’s movie Maleficent on one of the film blogs I read. It triggered some memories about animated movie villains that really got under my skin as a kid. Which, honestly, wasn’t difficult. I was scared by most things as a kid.

So as far as I can remember, there were three movie bad guys that legitimately scared me when I was young:

  1. MaleficentGarfield Halloween Special: My memory is fuzzy on this one, but I vaguely remember Garfield and his dog (Otis?) going to a scary house and being accosted by ghosts. I can’t remember more than that because I’ve blocked out the memory. It was really scary. Ghosts are already scary enough, but ghosts that want to break into your house? No way. I got scared just doing the Google search for this image.
  2. Monstrous Ursula: In the Little Mermaid, Ursula is always a little scary. Purple skin and a huge, gaping smile will do that to you. But when she gets the king’s trident and gets really big and her voice gets all deep…I don’t care how old you are, that is scary stuff.
  3. Maleficent: I don’t remember this movie all that well, but I remember Maleficent. It’s something about those horns combined with her ability to appear anywhere at any time…yeah, she’s still scary.

What about you? What animated villains scarred you for life?

  1. Awww! That’s so cute! I can just see little toddler Jamey being all scared and running to his mommy for comfort! Adorbs! 😀

And it’s Odie. 😉 As for me, I was never scared by the animated villains for some reason. I think I just always knew they were fake and so thus was never truly afraid of them. But I also grew up watching Jaws, Freddy Krueger and Jason movies so I was a little more tough than my peers when it came to scary movies! 😉 But even those didn’t scare me a whole lot when I was younger. I liked scary movies. It wasn’t until my teenage years that watching something scared me. I shared on a different post that I was absolutely terrified of Kiefer Sutherland after watching Eye for an Eye, where he rapes a young girl. That scarred me for life. I don’t think I even knew that was possible until I saw it, and once I knew that was a reality and could happen in real life, I lost it. So for me, it’s things that I know are real that scare me. I also watched Exorcism of Emily Rose a couple years ago and that really messed me up, because evil is a real thing in our world and they showed just how powerful it can be. It shook me up quite a bit!

    • Right…”little toddler Jamey”…not “12-year-old Jamey”…not at all… 🙂

It sounds like you have a very high tolerance for being scared! I haven’t seen either of those movies, but I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t be able to handle them.

  2. Ursula was terribly frightening, but I’d have to say the thought of Cruella de Vil making coats out of dalmations probably scarred me the most. I couldn’t help but think of cute little puppies getting skinned alive.

    • That’s a great pick. Everything about her is scary, especially that dog-skin coat. Which makes me wonder…why are all of these really scary animated villains women? Are there any male bad guys who are really scary?

  3. Ursula always just seemed grumpy rather than scary to me. But I agree, Maleficent was effing scary. I also had my only nightmare of childhood about Rumplestiltskin, not animated but he just creeped me out hardcore.
