Now THIS Is How You Use Virtual Reality

You may have heard of a device called the Oculus Rift. It’s a virtual reality headset (really just a visual reality headset) that can make you feel like you’re really in a video game. I’ve seen some pretty cool uses for it, including a YouTube video where an elderly lady unable to go outside in real life who was able to use the Rift to walk around the “outdoors.”

There are even devices like an omnidirectional treadmill that you can walk on while using the headset, a great step towards actual virtual reality.

However, nothing I’ve seen so far is as cool as this.

Have you ever had a dream where you were flying? I’ve had a ton of them, and I want that. The device seen on that link is a horizontal apparatus that, when combined with the Rift, makes you feel like you’re a bird soaring through the sky. How amazing is that?!

When I saw the apparatus, it made perfect sense. If you have a virtual reality headset, you can go anywhere, do anything, be anyone. Why would you possibly remain on the ground? I can do that in real life.

Now, as cool as this thing apparatus is, I can’t imagine actually keeping one in my home. I’m sure it would raise some eyebrows, and I guarantee that “flying like a bird” wouldn’t be the first thing that crossed peoples’ minds when they saw it. But still, it’s a cool idea, and it leaves me hopeful for the future of virtual reality.
