Do you ever get back from vacation feeling like you need a vacation?
I’ve had a great couple of weeks. This is the first significant break I’ve taken from the blog in 7 years. I missed writing, but it was a good fit not to have to write while I was trying to relax. Emphasis on “trying.”
It was actually a really busy couple of weeks. I drove to Virginia (13 hours, several close calls with a full bladder. I never learn), then drove to the Outer Banks (6 hours) for a 32-person family reunion. I had a blast hanging out with my family on the beach, cooking and eating great food, and teaching/playing lots of board games. I only worked an hour or two each day, and it was late at night after everyone went to bed.
I actually did have a few days that were mostly relaxing between the beach and Gen Con. I mostly hung out with my niece, read, and worked on some game designs. I also ate a lot of the world’s best ice cream, Gelati Celesti.
The “vacation” ended with 4 days at Gen Con, a 60,000-person gaming convention in Indianapolis. Stonemaier Games didn’t have a huge presence there because we don’t have any products in stock, but we had two well-visited tables in a demo room near the main exhibition hall. Despite having to pee pretty much the entire time, I enjoyed meeting a number of backers, bloggers, reviewers, and fellow project creators and publishers. Also, the people watching at Gen Con is awesome because of all the cosplay. It’s perfectly normal to see Thor sitting next to a female Doctor Who sitting next to Gandalf (my favorite story is a Gandalf cosplayer who kept walking up to large groups of people in the hallways and shouting, “You shall not pass!”)
Oh, and I got to see the Cones of Dunshire played in real life! It’s a Parks and Rec thing.
And now I’m home! I have to say, I really missed my cats.
Here are some photos from the trip:
I would’ve loved to see the Ganfalf cosplayer dressed up like a university professor holding an exam proclaiming, “You shall not pass!”
The two ladies are cosplaying as Dragon Ball Z characters, Goku and Vegeta: https://images6.fanpop.com/image/photos/35400000/Goku-vs-Vegeta-dragon-ball-z-35485024-500-281.jpg
Glad you had a good holiday to recharge. You better get some rest and take it easy for a week or two!
That’s awesome! I prefer the Goku cosplay.
Aww… She’s cute as a button. 🙂 Where’s that ice cream? I want some. And I can’t believe you didn’t get it’s Dragon Ball Z. Skimpy outfits got the brain distracted, huh? 😉
The ice cream is only in Virginia, unfortunately. I would have brought some back if I were driving straight home.
Ha! I came here to tell you it was Goku and Vegeta (but barely enough clothing to tell). And also, that it was SO GREAT to meet you and hug you in person! Yay! I’m bummed I didn’t see Cones of Dunshire, Ben would be proud! 😉 Good thing you work for yourself and can take a day or two off to recover! 🙂
It was great to meet you too! I’m so glad that you and Jeff and the kids could stop by–you all are the best. I look forward to hearing about your Gen Con impressions on your blog (I wrote more about the convention in detail on the Stonemaier blog).
