The Ice Bucket Non-Challenge

article-2730463-20AC89D600000578-579_634x629I doubt I need to explain the ice bucket challenge at this point, but just in case, it’s this thing where you get publicly challenged via video by someone who dumps a bucket of ice water on their head. You can film yourself doing the same thing within 24 hours (and maybe donate some money) or you can donate $100 to the ALS Foundation. Then you challenge three people to do the same.

People are having a lot of fun with it, and it’s raised a lot of money for ALS research. Overall, it seems like a good trend. I would much rather something like this be trending than something like planking.

However, I must admit that I’m not a big fan of the public challenge. Sure, there are good things that come out of it, but there are other ways to spread the word than to guilt someone into doing something.

That’s why when I saw this video from one of my favorite game reviewers, I had to share it.

It starts off like any other ice bucket challenge video. Joel Eddy introduces himself, says that he got challenged by a few people, and says that his wife is going to dump the cold water on him.

But then something a little different happens. Joel says, “I’m not challenging anyone. I asked 6 people [privately] and they said they didn’t want to be challenged.” He goes on to say that he’s going to donate anyway.

I thought it was really, really cool that Joel privately contacted people before calling them out in public, giving them the option to decline. That was a very respectful approach to take. It’s the first time I’ve seen it out of all the ice bucket videos I’ve seen. Well done, Joel!

  1. I’m publicly challenging you, Jamey to the ice bucket video watching challenge. Oh, looks like you’ve already watched a few. Challenge completed, well done.
