Love/Hate: Pop Music

Last week I watched the “Lorde” episode of Southpark. I went online afterwards to see what the real Lorde (she’s a pop singer) thought of the episode, and she was surprisingly cool about it.

I had heard Lorde’s hit song “Royals” a while ago, but it didn’t seem like anything special to me. But there was a catch Lorde song in the Southpark episode (it turned out not to be a real song), so I gave Royals another try and actually listened to the lyrics this time (something I rarely do with songs…I have no idea what 99.99% of songs are about).

I have to say, I was really impressed. It’s a really clever song. So I bought it and have been listening to it almost nonstop…until this happened:

A few nights ago, a friend mentioned a song from Taylor Swift called “Shake It Off.” The folk-alternative lover in me disregarded the song until another friend mentioned the music video, which she found quite entertaining.

When I got home that night, I checked out the music video, which was a typical pop music video with a hundreds of quick cuts sewn up in to 4 minutes. But when I walked away from the video and just listened to the song, I fond something odd happening.

I was…dancing.

Move over, ebola: There’s a new fever in town, and it’s called Shake It Off. This song is so catchy!

So here’s the deal: Sometimes I forget how much fun pop music is. I love my Typhoon and my Generationals and my Lucius–they make beautiful, heartfelt, handcrafted music. Meanwhile, Lorde and Taylor Swift are autotuning their hearts out, but…it’s catchy. It’s good. It’s fun.

I’ve ignored the Top 10 lists on iTunes for years now, but I think I’m going to check in on it from time to time.

What’s your favorite guilty pleasure pop music song?

  1. I must admit that I avoid lots of pop music but I find those two INCREDIBLY catchy, along with Pharrell’s Happy song and everything from Weird Al (not exactly pop but still sort of pop).

    • Emma: I would have included Pharrell’s “Happy” on the list, as I was really into it for a few weeks earlier in the year…until I watched the music video with the music removed. It’s really weird, and it kind of ruined the song for me. Watch it at your own risk if you love the song. 🙂
