Pet Please #120: That Feeling You Get After You Fill Up Your Tank with Gas and Feel Like You Can Go Anywhere

fuelgaugeIt’s all about the juxtaposition.

A few days ago I was running low on gas. I go through only about a tank of month, meaning I only have to stop at a gas station about 12 times a year.

That’s ideal, because I don’t really like stopping at gas stations. It’s an inconvenience, and I’m always a little worried that someone will drop a cigarette in the wrong space and the whole place will blow up.

So I usually stretch each tank as far as it will go, which is exactly what I did a few days ago. I was running on fumes, and I finally decided to fill up.

When the tank was full and I started up the car again, I did what I always do when I have a fresh tank of gas: I clicked the button in my car that tells me how many miles I can drive on that tank.

That is one of my favorite moments. For the briefest of moments, I feel like I can go anywhere. That’s what 400 miles feels like when you were almost down to 0.

Kansas City? Sure. Chicago? No problem. Vancouver? Check. Honolulu? I’ll be there soon. Naples? Have a pizza ready for me.

I love that feeling. Though I must say I’ve never actually done it, never thrown caution to the wind and just drove for a while to see where it takes me. Have you ever tried that? Where did you end up? I picture something like Doc Hollywood happening, which actually seems pretty awesome.

  1. I also do not like stopping for gas and push it as far as I can. Luckily I have never run out but last month I put 13.06 gallons in my tank that has a capacity of 13.3. That one might have been a little too close.

  2. I like to fill up my car when it’s half way full. But one time when I was curious about how much gas does it hold that I didn’the fill it until it came to a complete stop. Luckily the car was a couple feet from a gas station that I was able to push my car to get some gas. You can say I like to live dangerously. ☺
