The Future of Electric Roads

charginglaneFor a while now I’ve been excited about electric cars, but dubious that the technology could catch on. There are so many limitations: They have limited range, they’re slow to charge for long road trips (if you can even find a recharging station), and if you live in an apartment, you don’t have easy access to a way to recharge the car at home.

Well, I read something today that changes everything. It’s brilliant, and I’m curious to see if it works out.

The idea, which is being tested in the UK, is to create highway lanes that recharge electric cars while you drive. That’s right–they use a wireless system to continuously charge electric cars.

Imagine the possibilities. If the technology advances enough, you might never need to stop at a gas station again. The road itself would charge the car as you drive. In fact, combined with self-driving car technology and in-car toilets, you could drive from coast to coast without stopping at all. The car becomes a self-contained perpetual motion machine.

This. Is. Awesome.
