The Funniest Show on TV Is…

…Nathan For You.

I’m not always a fan of awkward humor. The British version of The Office often made me cringe so much that I didn’t have any room for laughter. I couldn’t get into Curb Your Enthusiasm for the same reason.

But somehow, Nathan For You works. It is amazing.

The premise is that Nathan Fielder, a comedian and business school graduate, lends his “expertise” to struggling local businesses with outlandish–but somehow logical–ideas. It works because Nathan comes across as truly genuine and passionate about his ideas, yet purposely oblivious to why someone might not be receptive to them.

He also takes every idea to the extreme. For example, in an earlier episode this season, he tried to improve a horse ranch’s profits by expanding their clientele to people who weigh more than 260 pounds (apparently you’ll hurt a horse if you weigh more than that). To offset the weight, he attached giant weather balloons to a heavyset person. But that wasn’t enough–to make sure that the balloons didn’t pop, he had trucks with people holding tree-blockers ride alongside the horse, as well as a drone overhead to prevent birds from pecking at the balloons.

In tonight’s episode, he tries to get a travel agent to expand her business into funeral home services, as most of her clientele were quite old. However, after learning that more and more people are choosing cremation–but daunted by the expense of a proper cremation oven–Nathan decided to test out a pizza oven to see if it would work. He built a body out of dough, prepared the inside of it anatomically with ribs, pepperoni, and spaghetti sauce, and even put clothes on it before presenting it to the bewildered pizzeria owner. It was the hardest I’ve laughed since…well, since the segment that led off the show 10 minutes before that.

If you enjoy laughter and mirth, I highly recommend Nathan For You. Let me know what you think if you give it a try.

  1. Amazing? The last comedy I was really impressed with is The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. How does this compare? Also, I haven’t checked out Master of None yet, but I hear very good things about that as well.
