I loved Season 1 of Netflix’s The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. In fact, I’m kind of in awe of it. By now I should know that Netflix, Amazon, Hulu, Yahoo, and other online-only content creators can release shows that are just as good as network and cable television, but I’ve had a hard time wrapping my mind around that idea.
Just like Yahoo’s season of Community and Hulu’s season of The Mindy Project, Kimmy Schmidt is just as good–if not better–as most other sitcoms. I love the 30-Rock sense of humor told through the always-peppy eyes and heart of the titular character. The visual jokes are amazing, and this season features strong storylines for a number of characters.
I actually don’t have much more to say–I just wanted to see if others are watching it and to find out what you think. Let me know your thoughts in the comments!
I’m currently on episode 8 and I’m loving it so far.
In his autobiography, Steve Martin says that his goal when writing The Jerk was “a laugh on every page.” I don’t know enough about screenwriting to know exactly what that means but it is clear from the context that it is a lot. I think the goal on Kimmy, though, is a laugh on every line and they very nearly accomplish it. Half the time I can’t hear the next joke over my own laughter.
I didn’t realise Season 2 was out – awesome – thanks for the heads up! Season 1 was really good. Lots of jokes.
Sometimes I think they even have two jokes happening at the same time–a visual joke and a verbal joke. So good. 🙂
I thought the season was hilarious! I’m glad that they fleshed out the characters a lot more, while still retaining the same humor and tone that makes me love the show. Kimmy is still irrepressibly bubbly, but dealt with some deeper issues, especially in the last few episodes. Jacqueline is still ridiculously spoiled, but her conscience got the best of her several times this season. And Titus learns to care about someone other than himself while still being a total diva. But the show handles these character developments in a way that still makes you laugh hysterically the whole time.
I loved Kimmy’s interactions with her Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde therapist (trying to remain relatively spoiler free for others) and I really hope that character returns for season 3. And the last minute or two of the finale makes it seem like my other favorite character will be back with a bigger role next season as well. His craziness was the only thing missing from season 2 for me.
