Orlando

Today I was planning to write something silly, as I usually do, but I can’t. I just can’t.

The worst mass shooting in US history happened early this morning in Orlando. A solitary gunman shot and killed at least 50 people.

My heart is heavy for those who died, as well as their families, friends, and LGBT people around the world. I’m grateful for those who were there to help: the survivors who lent a hand or helped people escape, the first responders who put a stop to the violence, and the doctors and nurses at nearby hospitals.

My heart is heavy for the elected officials in this country who are unable to keep automatic weapons out of the hands of bad people. They are failing those whom they’ve sworn to serve and protect. I’m grateful for the people who struggle daily to correct the notion that better gun regulation equates to some sort of tyranny.

My heart is heavy for Muslims in the world. Muhammad Ali, a strong proponent of peace, passed away just days ago, bit Muslims everywhere will be unfairly be associated with the extremism of the Orlando shooter. Just as I hope I am not judged when the worst Catholics in the world commit unspeakable acts, I hope the same reason can be granted to Muslims.

I stand with Orlando.
