Your First Fictional Arousal

The other day I was talking with a friend about an offbeat topic, and I thought it might provide some interesting discussion here. Or we’ll all just feel awkward for a few minutes.

The discussion started with Outlander. I had heard that the books were stimulating, so I asked her if that was the case.

At that point a memory floated to the surface of my mind about the first time I was aroused reading a book (or perhaps ever). Just aroused, nothing else.

I was around 12 or 13, and I was reading a fantasy novel. I can’t remember the name of it, but I know it was about a young woman who wasn’t allowed to join the army, so she bound her breasts, cut her hair, and posed as a young man.

The saucy scenes are those when she falls for a male soldier. As she reveals herself to him and as their relationship progresses, things get pretty heated. (At least, at the time they seemed heated. It was YA fantasy, so I’m sure the descriptions were vague.)

I distinctly remember knowing that the book was making me feel really good, though I didn’t quite know why or how. All I knew was (a) I wanted to keep reading and (b) I did NOT want to be disturbed.

I’m fascinated by the idea that the written word can connect to our hormones, especially at a young age. Did you have a similar experience with a book? Which book?
