Have You Seen Mr. Robot?

202191_014Having finished Deadwood a few days ago (which, as my previous post suggested, is truly an incredible show), I moved on to another highly regarded show, Mr. Robot.

I had heard good things about the show from a techie friend who called it the most accurate portrayal of a hacker in television/movies. Plus, /film has a weekly post about the show, something they only do for shows they hold in high regards. I trust their judgment.

After watching 4 episodes of the show, I agree with the critics–the show deserves all the praise it has received. It is a show about a hacker, but it goes well beyond that. There are a number of fascinating characters to learn about, relate to, and root for. There’s plenty of mystery–some of it obvious, some of it less so. And it has an overarching theme about society that any lover of Fight Club would enjoy.

However, there is one element of the show that–while really well written–is kind of hard to watch. I didn’t fully realize it until 3-4 episodes in, and now I’m hesitant to continue.

The main character, Elliot, is really, really low energy. Part of it is related to his depression and drug use, but I think a big part of it is that’s just the way he is. It’s hard to explain, but the more I watched, the more drained I felt, as if Elliot’s personality was rubbing off on me. (Then I watched an episode of Dating Naked and all was good.)

So I’m trying to figure out if I should continue or if I should just read episode summaries to appreciate the clever writing from a distance. If you’ve seen it, what do you think?

  1. I just binged watch the last 4 episodes of the 2nd season this weekend. I don’t want to reveal to much but Elliot’s character is just that low key, but I keep being surprised by him and the show going on through the second season. Definitely recommend to keep watching. I’m also halfway through the Harry Potter Rationality series, post prison. Thank you again for recommending it!
