My Most Anticipated Movies of 2017

Looking back at my 2016 list, I’m quite happy with how many of my eagerly anticipated movies ended up surprising me and/or meeting my high hopes. There were only a few big letdowns (The BFG, Batman vs. Superman, Suicide Squad, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them) and only a few movies that I didn’t actually watch (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: Sword of Destiny, Warcraft, Ghostbusters).

Will 2017 hold up to 2016’s level of excellence? We’ll find out. Here are the movies I’m eager to see:

  • The LEGO Batman Movie (February 10): The trailer just makes me happy.
  • Fist Fight (February 17): I need some good comedies to look forward to. I have no idea if this will be any good, but the trailer kind of looks funny? Maybe?
  • Logan (March 3): This seems like the most muted superhero movie ever, which makes me incredibly intrigued.
  • The Fate of the Furious (April 14): What can I say? I have a lot of fun watching Fast & Furious movies.
  • Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (May 5): This is probably #1 on my list. My hopes are all too high for it.
  • Wonder Woman (June 2): DC, I just can’t quit you. Please be good. Please be good.
  • Spider-Man: Homecoming (July 7): I loved Spidey’s brief appearance in Civil War. It looks like they nailed the casting and tone.
  • War for the Planet of the Apes (July 14): This series has been one of the biggest surprises for me over the last few years.
  • Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets (July 21): I crave a really well-done, all-out sci-fi movie. With a string of disappointments over the years, I hope this one breaks the streak.
  • Thor: Ragnarok (November 3): YES. I don’t know anything about this comic book plotline, and I don’t want to know anything until I show up at the theater.
  • Justice League (November 17): DC, you have two chances this year to get it right. You can do it!
  • Star Wars: Episode VIII (December 15): I gotta promise myself not to watch trailers this time. I really want to go into this knowing nothing.

Also curious about: The Mummy, Ghost in the Shell, John Wick 2, Baywatch, Dunkirk, Kong: Skull Island, The Dark Tower, Blade Runner 2049, Logan Lucky

What movies are you really looking forward to in 2017?

  1. A Monster Calls, which won’t open here in the Netherlands till februari.
Valerian looks interesting, like Jupiter Ascending and John Carter were. But I approached those movies with the mindset of a great saturday afternoon spectacle that you love when you are ten, twelve years old. Too bad they were marketed to an older crowd and therefore failed.
The Marvel Films and Star Wars are a given (especially VIII, being the last Leia movie wel’ll get with Carrie Fisher ;( ).
Beauty & The Beast, I’ve always loved the animated one and looking at what they’re accomplishing with live action…
Those are the visually spectacular movies, I’m sure there’ll be a bunch more if I put my mind to it. :P.

  2. I’m cautiously optimistic about Star Wars VIII, but excited for Guardians 2, Spidey, Logan (love the grim nature of it). The Apes series looks like it might be worth a viewing. I want to like Kong because I like the world of King Kong. The D.C. movies i expect disappointment.

  3. Most of the ones you’ve listed were already on my “must see in theaters or at least watch when it is on DVD” list, and the only other movies currently on my “future watch” list (that’s a much better name!) are The Zoookeeper’s Wife, Kingsmen: The Golden Circle, and Cloverfield 2017.
The Zookeeper’s Wife is one I’d probably wait to watch, as well as the Kingsmen (I can’t resist a spy movie, even if the spies are a little zany), and the Cloverfield movie is just because I’m a completionist, so I feel like I must find out what happens in the next movie (hopefully it’s not as scary as the last Cloverfield movie).

    • I forgot one: The Space Between Us
The premise of someone being born on Mars and spending the first 15-16 years of their life on a foreign planet has my curiosity piqued.

  7. I’m interested in seeing Blade Runner 2049, Star Wars: Episode VIII, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Logan, Spider-Man: Homecoming, T2 (Trainspotting sequel), Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets, Alien: Covenant, The Dark Tower, Ghost in the Shell, Kong and Thor: Ragnarok (in that order). There are always some surprises… but it’s rare my radar for new films misses much. The Lego Batman Movie will be something my 6 year old son and I will be going to without fail because it’s a Lego film starring Batman. As for any DC films… I think that they miss the mark time and time again. No need to put myself through yet more films of superhero fail.
