Ok, Google: Order Me a Burger

To end the week, I have something clever and something funny to share, both stemming from the same ad campaign.

Yesterday, Burger King launched this 15-second ad:

In case you can’t watch it, it’s a Burger King employee saying that he doesn’t have time to explain what makes the Whopper great, so he says, “Ok Google, what is the Whopper burger?”

For any Google Home owners, when they watched the commercial, the words “Ok Google” activated the device and made it start describing the Whopper.

Personally, I think this is brilliant. Sure, it’s a gimmick, and an annoying one for all Google Home owners, but it’s so clever! At the very least, it got people talking about and watching a burger commercial. I hardly ever watch commercials, yet I’ve seen this ad enough times that I kind of want a Whopper.

Here’s where it gets really funny, though. People figured out that the ad was triggering Google Home to read the Wikipedia page for the Whopper. Of course, Wikipedia pages can be edited, so soon people around the world were listening to their Google Home device reporting the following messages (it changed throughout the day):

  • “The Whopper is a burger, consisting of a flame-grilled patty made with 100% rat and toenail clippings.”
  • “The Whopper is a cancer-causing hamburger.”
  • “The Whopper is a burger, consisting of a flame-grilled patty made with 100% medium-sized child.”
  • “The Whopper is topped with sliced tomatoes, onions, lettuce, cyanide, pickles…”

I don’t know why that made me laugh so hard, but it did. Credit to the Philip DeFranco show for alerting me to this situation.

What do you think about this commercial and the response. Brilliant? Funny? Annoying? Intrusive?
