What Do You Do When You’re Sick?

When I have a cold, my deepest regrets are (a) that I’m not interested in eating chocolate and desserts and (b) that I can’t work as much as I want to.

I got sick this past week. I felt it starting to hit me on Tuesday. Neither a nap nor a long nights’ sleep filled with feverish sex dreams warded it off.

On Wednesday I was fully sick. My nose was super runny and congested, and no matter how many blankets I covered myself in or naps I took, I couldn’t shake a fever.

Oddly enough, I still had a proper appetite. That was nice. I get sick about once a year, and it’s typically a head cold, so I can eat normal foods. It’s just sweets I’m not interested in when I’m sick, which bothers me to no end, as that’s my compass for normality.

Thursday was probably the hardest, because that’s the day I expected to be better. I was ready to work a normal 14-hour day. But I was completely exhausted. This is how bad it was: I slept 10 hours the night before, woke up, ate breakfast, and could function so little that I proceeded to take a 2-hour nap.

But as much as I loathe being sick, I really do love those moments when my mind and body start acting normal again. Not eating chocolate for 3 days really makes you appreciate how good it is.

How do you act when you’re sick? Do you like to be taken care of or left alone? What do you miss the most?

  1. Hope you’re feeling better. Personally, when I’m sIck, I want to lie on the couch, watch movies, and sleep. And I want a tiny bit of attention, and a steady supply of saltines, tomato soup, amd Coke Zero. Also, FYI, next time you feel like you’re about to get a cold, get a bottle of Zicam melts, and take one every few hours. You will get better so much faster! Hope you’re back to chocolate ASAP

    • Thanks Brian! I appreciate the tip about Zicam.

And yes, fortunately I’m back on the chocolate. 🙂

  2. I like to take Airborne as soon as I feel like the cold is inevitable…it tends to be very effective at lessening the effects! I prefer to be left alone.

  3. Jamey,

I am the world’s worst patient…despite being an extrovert, I want nothing more than to be left alone in my misery. However, I want someone within earshot to please bring me hot tea and lemon. I miss having the energy to run…even though I miss playing games and working, I miss running, because that’s my alone time to pray, re-center, and think.

    Cheers,
    Joe

    • Ha ha…that’s great, Joe. I think I was like that when I was young. I wanted my parents to be nearby but not too close when I was sick, which I’m sure annoyed them to no end. 🙂
