Which Upcoming 2017 Movies Are You the Most Excited About?

I’m giddy with excitement about a number of movies in the final 2 months of 2017, so I thought I’d share them here in case you share my enthusiasm.

First, an honorable mention: Stranger Things season 2. It’s not a movie, but I’m just as excited about it as any film, and I intend to watch at least several hours of it with friends on Saturday. I can’t wait.

Here’s the rest by category:

Comedy: Daddy’s Home 2, Father Figures, The Disaster Artist

Drama: Murder on the Orient Express, Phantom Thread, Goodbye Christopher Robin, Downsizing, I Tonya

Superhero: Justice League, Thor: Ragnarok, Bright

Pure Geekdom: Star Wars: The Last Jedi, The Shape of Water, and Coco

Of those, the films I know for sure I’ll see in the theater are Thor: Ragnarok and Star Wars. The rest depend at least partially on reviews/timing. I’m particularly curious about Phantom Thread, as it’s not at all the type of movie I’d normally watch, but it has Daniel Day Lewis in it.

Also, while I’ve fallen into the temptation of watching trailers for most of these movies, I’ve successfully avoided watching anything about Star Wars. Avoiding Star Wars trailers, teasers, commercials, and scoops has been one of the hardest things I’ve ever done.

UPDATE: Ready Player One was on my list, but apparently it won’t be released until March.

Are you excited about any of these movies? Are there any on your list that aren’t on mine? Which will you definitely see in the theater?

  1. after your recommendation of “Ready Player One,” I borrowed the book from the local library and am currently reading it. I’m engrossed in it and look forward to how the story progresses. It’s a real page turner! Now I’m looking forward to the movie. 🙂

  2. Can’t wait for Stranger Things tomorrow! The Shape of Water looks great so that will be a no brainer. I love Del Toro’s visual style and hoping it will be as good as Pan’s Labyrinth. I’m also really excited to bring my daughter to see Coco now that she’s old enough to sit through a movie. And I’m sure I’ll see Star Wars at some point. Before you go see Daddy’s Home 2, you should rewatch the first one and see if you can spot me 🙂

Among stuff you haven’t mentioned, I’m really looking forward to The Darkest Hour (Gary Oldman is definitely due for an Oscar) and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.

    • That’s exciting about your daughter seeing a full movie! I’m curious to see if it’s kid-friendly. I’m sure it is, but it also looks a little spooky.

Are you in Daddy’s Home? Which scene?

      • It’s Pixar so I’m assuming it’s kid-friendly but also will likely contain plenty of material that adults will enjoy.

My wife’s aunt has season tickets to the Pelicans. She couldn’t make it to a game and let us have the tickets. It just so happened that they filmed the basketball game scene (the one where Will Ferrell gets escorted out after throwing a basketball in a cheerleader’s face) during the halftime of that particular game. As Will gets escorted out of the court by the security guards, my wife and I are definitely visible for a few seconds. My claim to fame!

  3. I’ll definitely be seeing Star Wars!! I can’t believe you’ve avoided seeing trailers, etc. Those get me even MORE excited! I tried to pre-purchase my tickets, but I’m in Tanzania right now and for some reason it won’t let me buy my tickets. I’ll have to hope there are decent seats available once we return to the States for Christmas. I’m not really even aware of any other movies being released since we don’t watch live TV here. We DO get Netflix though, and hopefully Stranger Things is one of the approved ones available here. (Not all shows that are on Netflix in the US are on Netflix in Africa)

    • Hopefully you get Stranger Things on your Netflix there! I wish I could watch a spoiler-free Star Wars trailer, but for The Force Awakens, the trailer gave away something that happens in the last 15 minutes of the movie, so I don’t want to risk it. 🙂

      • Ah, that makes sense. I guess it helps that I have an awful memory. 🙂 Just looked and we CAN get Stranger Things here! Yay! Now to find the time to watch it.
