What’s Your Fanciest Home Appliance?

When I was visiting my family for Thanksgiving, I stayed at my sister’s house. She and her husband have a big house, enough space for their 2 kids and some guest bedrooms.

While I was there, I discovered a feature to an appliance that I had never noticed before. I soon became somewhat obsessed with it. Check it out:

That’s right: The door to their fridge is actually 2 doors in 1! You can open the entire door, just like any other 2-panel fridge. Or if you just need to get a condiment, you can pull a trigger in the handle instead and open a thin exterior door that reveals the inside of the condiment racks.

I don’t know why I love it, but I do. I would get one if I didn’t already have a perfectly functional fridge.

Do you have any fancy appliances like this at your house?

  1. I never thought I’d be responding to a blog on a subject so close to my heart! My appliance isn’t fancy, but it’s a side-by-side refrigerator-freezer, old enough (almost 30 years) that the freezer has 2 doors. They don’t make them that way any more. Believe me, I know, because when the freezer suddenly registered 40 degrees F. about six weeks ago and I had to turn the thermostat all the way to maximum and keep it there to “cure” it, I looked all over for a 2-door freezer replacement. The refrigerator diagnostitian said the problem is a failed thermostat, but an extended search reveals that the part is no longer made nor is it available refurbished. So I continue to run my beloved “Duo”—do you name your favorite inanimate helpers?—on maximum cold, three notches above where it ran before, and hope for the best.

Why am I so attached to Duo? True, it is more energy efficient to open only one door to search for and retrieve the desired items. And, there is a cold water-ice dispenser section in between the two freezer sections—disconnected after its tubing sprang a leak and flooded the wood kitchen floor many years ago—on whose shelf I put items on their way between freezer and kitchen counter. But the more telling reason for my over(?)-attachment is probably that I believe I can better remember which frozen items are where—i.e., the upper or lower section—when there are two sections than if my memory had to encompass all four shelves. Go figure!

    • Dorothy: That’s really interesting! I’m impressed it’s lasted that long. What you’re saying about memory makes perfect sense. 🙂

  2. I live in an apartment so don’t buy any big appliances, but I do have a Sous vide machine that I bought for $200, and then the water tub and accessories that I bought for a total of provably another $100+ total. Perfectly cooked to order steaks that a super tender. You can prep them and freeze them, and then throw them in the bath and let them cook for an hour or so, or more and have dinner ready. Heres a video on what it is: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YLS4UGD-2Zk

  3. Most of our appliances came with the house when we bought it and they’re all fairly old. Definitely not fancy. If I had to pick a “fancy” appliance I would have to go with, like Sean, the Anova Sous Vide. Fairly fancy way to cook but everything turns out awesome. We also recently got an air fryer. It’s another weird way to cook that I would consider “fancy.”

  4. We rent, but the owners of our apartment put in the FANCIEST Asian showers in our bathrooms. They have a steam function, a massage function, a foot spa function. I rarely use all the functions, but the steam is great when someone has a cold or needs a quick suit steam 🙂
