Dream Room #5: The Secret Passage Dilemma

It’s time to continue the series of articles about rooms I’d like to have in my house if I ever move out of this condo and build my own home.

When I was young, I loved the idea of having a secret passage in my house, especially if it connected to a secret room. I think this stemmed from my love of medieval castles, which I assumed all had secret passages.

Also, I was scared of a lot of things, so I thought having secrets built into the house would keep me safe if there was ever a home invasion. Yes, these are the things 6-year-old Jamey was thinking about.

But then I watched an episode of a show called Mathnet–I’m pretty sure that was the source of this–where the detectives discovered a secret passage in a house. Cool, right? That is, until it was revealed that they weren’t the only people who knew about the secret passage.

That, my friends, is the secret passage dilemma. They’re great if you’re the only one who knows about them. But if anyone else discovers the secret passage, they can use it to hide and sneak up on you.

So I think my decision is that I wouldn’t mind having a secret room, but not a secret passage. One of my uncles designed and built his home, and he included a “secret” room in it. It’s a small office that opens to the living room. I could see that being helpful if you have kids under the care of someone else and you just need to get some work done.

What do you think? Would you want a secret passage and/or secret room in your house?

  1. Yes, I would absolutely love a secret passage. I remember finding an attic entrance once in a family member’s upstairs closet. I felt transported and elated to open and discover the room. Not an entrance to Narnia, but nevertheless very cool.

  2. One of my childhood friends had a secret passage that connected his closet to his sister’s closet. It was hidden behind the clothing racks and even had a small door to access it. We thought it was the coolest thing as kids. I’m sure they weren’t as thrilled with the secret passage when they became teenagers!

  3. Jamey,

Absolutely! Having visited a number of castles in England and on the mainland in Europe, there were a fair number of them that had passages leading to other places within the castle. Also, there are locations in the U.S. with far more modest homes that have small rooms adjacent to studies with exactly the same idea…a place to find refuge.

    Cheers,
    Joe
