Have You Ever Done a Real Spit Take?

In case you’re unfamiliar with the term, a “spit take” is when someone responds to something humorous or shocking by literally spitting out the liquid in their mouth. I would say it’s most often seen in sketches where comedians are playing around with the idea of spit takes, and it occasionally happens in movies and TV shows.

And, rarely, in real life.

Today I was having lunch at a restaurant with a friend, and I leaned my head back a little too far while taking a sip of my drink. I realized it was happening a millisecond too late–my body basically said NO.

Every drop of liquid in my mouth instantly sprayed everywhere.

It wasn’t a cough. It wasn’t like me spitting out some liquid. It wasn’t a spray or stream. Rather, it was a cloud of tiny juice particles that covered my shirt, food, and table.

I was incredibly embarrassed, fortunately my friend was good natured about it. Amazingly, no one else in the crowded restaurant seemed to notice.

After we cleaned up the table, we had a really good laugh. I’m still laughing about how absurd and extreme it was. It really was the pinnacle of a spit take. I didn’t know my body could do that.

My only regret is that it wasn’t actually a reaction to something my friend said. Even then, I’m not sure it would have been as comical–I’ve laughed with liquid in my mouth before, and it didn’t come close to comparing to this.

  1. Lolz, no! But I have been on the receiving side of a coffee spit take. 🙂 Hmmm…Spit Take. I am now brainstorming rules for a new party game.

  2. I’ve definitely accidentally done it with a sneeze, but that probably doesn’t count. I know I’ve almost lost all of the beverage out of my mouth when someone said something funny, but I caught “most” in my hand…meaning I didn’t let it spray everywhere. I would think that’s the most likely outcome unless your hands are occupied.

  3. Something similar has happened to me a couple of times. The most extreme case was when I was 9 months pregnant. This period of my life was characterised mainly by involuntary letting out of substances of my body and no comfortable position for sleep… During one game night my friend who works at a pharmacy, told us a real life situation he was in with a male customer. Apparently the customer went to ask something embarassing and after a lot of almost getting to the point attitude, he finally admitted he needed to buy a pill for his girlfriend (who he thought he had knocked up). My friend sold him the pill. Before he could tell him what it is and how it is used, the customer hastily opened the pill and swallowed it. I didn’t expect the story to unravel so quickly, so at the time I was drinking juice from a cup. What happened next was me squirting juice all over the place from my mouth and expecially from my nose…Due to the added ‘funniness’ of my reaction, all participants burst into laughing, which led me to laugh even harder, which in itself led me to pee myself (all I have to say is – Thank god for pads!). Let’s say I won’t be doing that again anytime soon.
