What Did You Think of Ocean’s 8?

As you may know, heist flicks are one of my favorite types of movies. I posted my Top 10 list a few months ago, and proceeded to watch (and write about) a few of the movies mentioned in the comments of that post. Logan Lucky, one of those new movies, would definitely be on an updated Top 10. I still need to watch Heat, though.

Needless to say, I was quite excited about seeing Ocean’s 8 this weekend, and it did not disappoint. It was snappy, clever, and funny. Here are my 3 favorite things about it (minor spoilers):

  1. The Heist: A great heist movie needs a great heist, right? Ocean’s 8 hit those beats perfectly for me: Explain the plan, prepare for the heist, execute it, then explain the things we didn’t see the first time. It’s really well executed. Oh, and there’s a mini-heist at the beginning that’s 100% Sandra Bullock, and it’s brilliant.
  2. The Humor: While the laughs area little slow at the beginning of the movie, they pick up as soon as the crew is assembled. Awkwafina is probably the highlight, though Anne Hathaway is also great at playing the person who I think people assume Anne Hathaway is like. James Corden is very funny as well.
  3. The Twists: There are several solid twists in the movies, including one that requires simple addition from the audience, yet everyone in my group except one person missed it.

I would say that the weird thing about the movie is that the “8” share exceptionally little screentime as a group. I think they’re in maybe 3 very brief scenes together, and all in the same location, which makes me wonder if they simply filmed those scenes all during the same week and then broke up the rest of filming based on each actor’s schedule. That’s perfectly fine–I’m guessing most movies do that–though it would have been nice to see them all together for more than 2 minutes of screentime.

Overall, I’m very happy with how the movie turned out, and I hope there’s a sequel. What did you think of it?
