Valentines 2023 Treats and Movies

Megan and I surprised each other on Valentine’s Day with some fun treats, so I thought I’d mention them (and some rom coms we watched) before this week is over.

Megan gave me a card from Sweeter Cards, which is a clever combination of a greeting card combined with a bar of chocolate. It has spoiled greeting cards for me–now I want them all to include chocolate.

Megan likes tea, so I got her some fancy-looking tea from Harvey & Sons:

And, of course, we watched some new rom coms. I’ll rate them from worst to best:

3. Your Place or Mine: This is a rare rom com in which the two lead characters are barely ever in the same place–the movie goes out of its way to ensure they are separated by as much distance as possible. I really wanted to like it, as I enjoy the people in the movie, but almost nothing in this movie works.

2. At Midnight: This movie tries to do some interesting things, combining the feel of classic rom coms with the Notting Hill formula (but in Mexico). Both of the lead characters are great, and there’s a good amount of humor in the movie. The last 30 minutes don’t work as well as the first hour due to a misunderstanding, but it’s a decent light rom com.

1. Somebody I Used to Know: This is a very solid rom com that is more funny than serious (despite the tone of the movie poster). It leans into some movie tropes and then veers away from them with some unexpected twists. If you watch only one of these movies, Somebody I Used to Know is definitely my recommendation.

How did you celebrate Valentine’s Day this year (if at all)? Did you watch any good rom coms over the weekend?

  1. Thanks for the recommendations. We watched Starting Over, a 1970’s Burt Reynold’s romantic comedy. It was a fun old fashioned romance.
