Truthbits

Okay, so today I’m not going to redefine electronic communication. I will, I promise, in the near future–probably tomorrow. I just have to work out a kink or two.

For today, I have a bunch of little things I’ve been saving up that I want to say. So here goes:

  • “Speakeasy” is an awesome name for a bar.
  • Red Hot Chili Pipers” is an even awesomer name for a bagpipe group. And they’re real. And they’re kind of awesome. I like the inclusion of the female dancers in really short kilts.
  • The writer’s strike just ended. Hallelujah. It amazes me that the writers actually agree to not write when they’re on strike. That seems really creatively stilting to me.
  • As for my writing endeavors, still no bites. 9 rejections out of 12 (and 3 outstanding).
  • Caroline just gave me the most awesome Valentine’s Day gift: She adopted a potbelly pig! The best part about it is that we don’t have to house or feed the pig–it already happily lives at a rescue farm. But we’re buying him food for a few months, and we’ll go visit him. I’ll post photos.
  • I read something the other day from a publishing conference that said that you can no longer create a web page and expect for it to become a destination. Basically, the article said, you have to syndicate through an established site like Facebook. For some reason that left a really bad taste in my mouth. I was also eating smoked salmon at the time, which might have had something to do with the taste.
  • Pet Peeve: People who drive in the right lane with no intention of turning right. Have you ever gotten stuck behind a single car at a stoplight who isn’t turning right, so you have to wait for the whole cycle to turn right? Show a little consideration!
  • I read that taking a cold shower every morning can help relieve depression–it has the same effects of anti-depressants. I’m not depressed, and I really don’t like a cold shower at any time, but I find it interesting that a cold shower cold trigger the release of those hormones that some people need more of.
  • I’ve discovered that I love the articles on Wired that pop up on the Google feed on Gmail. It seems like a great magazine, but why would I ever subscribe if the articles come to me for free viewing on the internet?
  • The humor teacher from the Borat movie is running my Gala live auction. If that’s not enough reason to attend the Gala, I don’t know what is.

Tomorrow:

I Finally Redefine Electronic Communication

  1. More Thoughts:

The Facebook syndication thing is more of a generational thing. If you want a younger audience, seriously consider it. If you’re marketing to old people, commercial segments during 60 minutes are still your best bet b/c nobody knows what Facebook is and isn’t going to learn.

I’ll let you know how the cold shower goes. I’m dumb enough to actually try it.

Wired the magazine is actually worth purchasing, according to many ppl. Have you ever seen it? Check it out the next time you goto a bookstore or something, the graphics are amazing and the formatting is beautiful.

    Its not “your” Gala, grasshopper.

  2. Good thoughts. I hope the cold shower doesn’t give you pneumonia.

I believe that Wired is worth purchasing, but is it that much better than the free online articles? I guess the graphics may make up the difference, but I rarely read something for the graphics. I read it for the quality and relevance of the articles, which I can just get online.

I’ve been avoiding saying who I work for on this blog, but I imagine everyone already knows. You’re right. It’s not my Gala. It’s the CSC Gala. And I’m the coordinator.
