Pet Peeve #7: Online News Videos Without Transcripts

batch1I get the vast majority of my news from the daily show, but occasionally I’ll hop on over to CNN.com to see what’s going on in the world. Often I’ll see articles with the little video camera icon next to their titles…at least, I’ll think they’re articles.

But when I click on the link, all I get is a video. I hardly ever want to watch a video about news. I can skim an article so much quicker than watching a video. Plus, it’s disruptive if I’m at work. I don’t mind having the option of watching the video, but I generally just want to read the transcript.

Take today, for instance. I went over to CNN and saw the breaking news that “‘Bachelor’ dumps fiance, switches to No. 2.” Big news, right? I wanted to cut right to the heart of it, to read the article about this important event.

But no. Click on that link, and you get a video. That’s it. No transcript.

There are some sites that provide transcripts on a regular basis, but it’s extremely rare that CNN does. I guess I’ll just have to continue to get my news from the Daily Show while I’m making dinner.

  1. I wholeheartedly agree. Few things make me more disgruntled than clicking on what looks like an interesting story, only to be disappointed to a video. Especially at work. You don’t want the rest of your office to know that you care if the bachelor is going #2, much less that you’re using a little of your work time to find out.
