Alert! This Game Is Awesome

The other day I randomly checked my TweetDeck cloud, which shows me the words that are being tweeted the most that moment in the Twitterverse (I think I just threw up in my mouth a little at the overuse of Twitter-related words in that sentence…why are these words in my vocabulary?).

Among the words in the cloud: Bron, LeBron, clutch, buzzer, best ever

Immediately I knew that LeBron James had hit a clutch buzzer beater in Game 2 of the Eastern Conference semifinals. However, I wish I had know this a few minutes in the past so I could watch it live myself.

You’re never going to know in advance when someone’s going to hit the winning shot at the buzzer. But you can know when the game is close in the final few minutes.

Thus, I propose a service that will text you when a game (sports of your choice) is really close in the final few minutes or going to overtime. Or when a pitcher is going for a perfect game in the eighth inning or a hitter is going for the cycle or for his 3rd home run of the day. Or when a quarterback starts a two-minute drill.

Basically, an alert that lets you know that you should drop what you’re doing and go turn on the TV for a few minutes to witness something spectacular and memorable. I don’t have the time to sit at the computer and watch ESPN refresh, but I can always spare a minute or two when Bron Bron has a chance to hit a winning fadeaway 3-pointer.

(Also, like most of my ideas, I’m guessing this already exists. Please tell me what it’s called and where I can sign up.)

  1. I think I just threw up in my mouth a little at the overuse of the phrase “just threw up in my mouth a little.” That joke stopped being funny about a week after Dodgeball came out…FIVE YEARS AGO! Not since Train’s 2001 hit “Drops of Jupiter” has something so good been so utterly destroyed by overuse. I propose an immediate moratorium on the use of that phrase on this blog (and any other arena of pop-culture) until such time that it becomes funny again, which is likely to be never.

ps. When I saw the title I thought this was going to be an endorsement of the latest game “from the makers of Settlers of Catan” or some other awesome game that I could play.

pps. I cannot believe that I included “this blog” in the “arena of pop-culture.” Congratulations to you!

  2. Fair enough about “just threw up in my mouth a little.” I didn’t even know the origin of it. I just like the phrase.

A game that I’m hoping to learn soon that’s more complicated than Settlers is called Agricola. You could also try the version of Settlers called “Cities and Knights,” which is awesome.

    Congratulations to me!

    • Lisa, that site is amazing! I signed up for a number of sports. I even got an alert yesterday for the perfect game, which I wouldn’t have known about! Thanks so much.
