Doglist

DSC00812When my girlfriend recently visited me for a long weekend, she had to kennel her dog, which cost her over $200. That’s like four meals at Iron Barley (I’m hoping if I namedrop that restaurant enough, they’ll give me free stuff).

This got me thinking: Why isn’t there a craigslist-type service that connects dog owners with people who want dogs temporarily? Not only could you charge a small fee for the service, but the dogsitters could also charge a reasonable fee and still be much cheaper than a kennel.

Who would want a dog temporarily?

  • Kids who keep asking for a dog but are likely to lose interest after a few days
  • People who think they want a dog but don’t really know
  • People who want the joy of dogs for a temporary basis but don’t want the commitment
  • People who have a dog that likes the occasional company of other dogs

You could even do a background check–like babysitting sites do–to make sure that you’re not handing your beloved Snowpuff over to someone who’s going to steal them, starve them, or Michael Vick them.

I’m guessing this already exists. If so, tell me where so my girlfriend can save a bunch of money the next time she comes out here.

  1. That’s my little one!! Isn’t she adorable??

I’d also like to mention that obviously I could have a friend watch her over the weekend (which is what i’m doing this weekend), but there needs to be a service for people who just moved to a city and haven’t made friends yet. Also, you don’t want to keep bothering your friends with dogsitting either.

  2. good idea! Who will start this idea? and oh by the way, this dog is really easy to care for 🙂 and that comes from ‘me’ who currently does not own a dog but if I did want a dog this is the dog for me. Nancy has done a great job in training and in combination with the dog’s personality, has made this dog easy to adopt or pet sit for.

  3. I’m learning the hard way that having two dogs is much harder than having one. When I had one, I could dole her out on my parents, siblings or friends. She was low maintenance and easy to care for.
Now I have two and don’t want to overwhelm any one person/family, so I’m separating them this weekend when I go away. That means securing two family members to dogsitting, and using up favors twice as fast.

I don’t think I could leave my dogs with a strange family I found on a website. The kennel makes me sad, but at least I know they’re professional and will care for the dogs. What if the other family doesn’t feed the dog, or beats them, or sells them on the black market for drug money?

  4. What a cutie! =0) We have had to put our dog in a kennel for a week when family couldn’t keep her but we didn’t pay that for the entire week. Wow, that’s a bunch o’ money to stay for a long weekend. Usually family members sit for us. Of course, one family in particular gets very attached and then hates giving her back.
