They’re called Hamburgers after a type of steak that originated in the port town of Hamburg. When German immigrants came to America they bought cheap cuts of meat, chopped them up and flavored them in the Hamburg style. Voila: the first hamburger was born. As for the tradition of putting them on buns, that is a much disputed story, and I will leave the answer to people more eager for invisible money than I.
