My First Book

I got something in the mail on Monday that made me smile. Big time.

This is my first published book.

Wait, you say? My name isn’t on the cover? Indeed it isn’t. I came on too late in the process to have that honor bestowed upon me. But I assure you that I wrote half of this book. See here:

Font too small?

The text on the next page continues, “…exploits and insights at www.jameystegmaier.com. Thank you for your contributions and your dedication.” That’s me! That’s here! This blog! In a book!

Here’s the story of how I got involved with this book. And now it’s real. This is an advance copy; the book won’t actually hit bookstores for another month, but it actually appears to be available in Kindle format on Amazon.com (for way more than the standard $9.99 price).

Now, I should say, I don’t consider this my book. I got lucky with this one–I was just in the right place at the right time and I knew the right person who I was able to help out. It feels great, but the next step is to publish my own book (well, actually, the next step is to publish someone else’s book through my publishing company, Blank Slate Press, but after that…).

Have you ever held your own creation in your hands? How did it feel?

  1. Jamey! This is spectacular. What a thrill and accomplishment. Congratulations all around to both Thomas and you. I’m so proud of you. Personally, I have not held anything like this in my hands (unless you count my children which I did labor long and hard for) but can only imagine the elation and absolute peace that comes with it. Well done.

  2. Awesome! I remember the days when we occasionally got a one-line shoutout in some random, hardly-ever-read medical textbook, and that felt like an amazing accomplishment. I can only imagine how this must feel. I know you worked hard on this and drove the project to fruition. Congratulations!

  3. Harley and Trev–Thanks so much. Harley, I’d have to say that a living, breathing child is a much bigger accomplishment than this book!

  4. Congratulations! I had a poem published in high school, and that was so awesome. I just might have to pick this up when it comes out. 🙂 Good luck with everything you are working on.

  5. Awesome! Congrats, dear bro!! I’m really happy for you. The author’s notes about you were really touching and very truthful. We’ll have to celebrate when you come east in June!

  6. Congrats, good sir! Nicely done. Your fiction in book form can’t be too far behind.

(And isn’t 75% of publishing being in the right place at the right time with the right person? Maybe not that high a percentage, but a significant one.)
