TGIF

A coworker and I were talking last week about Fridays. She said that her favorite thing to do on a Friday after work was go out for happy hour.

I was a little surprised, because I’m the exact opposite. On Friday after work, the last thing I want to do is go out. I want to go home and unwind. Put up my feet and call it a night. Maybe work out, cook some dinner, watch some Tivoed Thursday-night sitcoms, and then read or work on some projects.

So my coworker’s comments made me wonder how other people like to spend their Friday nights, particularly immediately after work. Do you like to go out? Go home? Go to a movie? Go shopping? Go jogging? What’s your ideal Friday?

  1. I 100% agree with you on this one. I can’t get home fast enough on Fridays. I’m usually so exhausted from the week by Thursday that I’m virtually useless in the evening until I get to sleep in on Saturday morning.

  2. I’m with you and Trev on this. I want to get home on Fridays. After work I don’t want to anything between leaving work and getting home. After I’m home for a while, I might entertain the idea of doing something with friends but not “going out.” No, the activity has to be something mellow like hanging out on someone’s porch on a nice evening–definitely not going to a bar. For the past few months though, I’ve been home alone on a Friday night enjoying a home-cooked meal (or Chipotle)and watching TV shows on Netflix and I don’t even feel embarrassed to say that anymore because I’ve realized that it’s quite a lovely evening and I’m 30 now so I don’t have to party on Fridays.

  3. I can totally be up for ‘just stopping and dropping’ on the sofa on a Friday night. However when I can I push myself to go dancing with a small group of folks and I find that dancing gets my blood moving and my mind off of my exhaustion from the week. and that being said… I only last until 9:30 and then it is off to good night sleep.

  4. This depends for me on what I have on Saturday.

If Saturday is open, then the trick is not to go home after work on Friday. Because you’ll inevitably want to stay home. But this is one of few times that you and your friends may have open to get together for extended time (as in, you don’t have to get up for work in the morning, so closing the 3am bar is not out of the realm of possibilities). In this scenario, I take advantage of it.

Otherwise, if Saturday is booked solid, or you have something early, then I like a little dinner and a show (possibly out with friends), and in bed normal time (~12:00) in order to be ready for whatever Saturday plans to throw at me.
