Ireland by Percentage so Far

If all I knew about Ireland came from the first day and a half of observations and experience, here are all the assumptions I’d make about Ireland:
  • It rains 0% of the time.
  • 99% of Irish people are thin and seemingly in shape.
  • 50% of dogs that walk by me are somewhat interested in tasting my leg (but not enough to actually bite me)
  • 0% of ATMs work here.
  • 100% of all Guinness here tastes 200% better than Guinness in the States
  • I can understand 3% of all stories told to me by old Irish men at pubs (specifically, one old Irish man)
  • 100% of coffee shops bewilderingly named “Insomnia Coffee Shop” close at the late hour of 6:00 pm in the evening

  1. I met a guy last night with a strong Irish accent. I mentioned I was from England and then we started talking about football. It was obvious that he loves football because he got really excited talking about it and then he started talking faster…I couldn’t understand a word he said. 🙂 Hope you’re having a great time!

  2. Drink LOTS of Guinness — because it really does NOT taste the same in the States. I could not stand the taste of Guinness after my trip to Ireland – took a few years of forgetting was the real Guinness tastes like to finally accept the version of Guinness in the States.

and for the stories — keep listening — and laughing — because it does not matter if you understand the stories… it is the laughter that matters “and that’s the truth”

  3. Is it true that you get 90% less ice in your beverages? All of the men in my family went one year, and they told me if you asked for extra ice in your drink, you got two cubes instead of one. 🙂

    • I’ve only had a few glasses of water and one of Coke to help answer that question, and there was plenty of ice in each. The glasses weren’t crammed with ice like they are in the states, but there was more that enough to satisfy the average ice lover.

  4. Before you leave, expect to speak with some muddled version of the same accent.
And upon your return home be 500% dissappointed in the Guinness here (Google “stuff white people like” and search for Ireland for the March 16, 2008 post. HILLARIOUS!).
