Steve Jobs

I just got on my computer a few minutes ago and learned, as many of you probably just did, that Steve Jobs has died.

I find myself deeply affected by this news, somehow brought to tears about the passing of a man I’ve never met.

I’m struggling to find words for this post. I’ve already read dozens of blogs and articles and Facebook posts lauding Mr. Jobs for his innovations, his companies, his impact on the world.

Perhaps that’s the best way to mourn someone, by acknowledging their accomplishments and memorializing their achievements. Of which Mr. Jobs had many.

But honestly, that’s not why I’m moved by his death. I can’t explain it any better than this: I am deeply saddened that a great man has left this world. He’ll never speak to his wife again or run his fingers through her hair. He’ll never hear the joyous cries of his children when he returns home from work. And he’ll never again squeeze a friend on the shoulder or share a laugh with them.

The world is more than just iPhones, folks. It doesn’t matter if you’re a CEO or a secretary, a movie star or a part-time DJ, you’re a person who was loved and beloved. Sure, some people stand a little taller than others when you look at their impact on the world. But in the end, it’s simply sad to say goodbye to a fellow human being.
