What’s Your Favorite Song Right Now?

I love this question, and I want to ask it more often. It’s an infinitely better question than, “What kind of music do you like?” That question is way too broad. It’s like asking what kind of food you like or what you like to do in your free time. There are too many possible answers, and it’ll leave the recipient of the question grasping for air.

Conversely, the question “What’s your favorite song right now?” is specific, topical, and fairly easy to answer. I say “fairly easy” because if you’re like me, you’re not all that good with song names, but you might be able to whip out your phone and find the answer on your “recently played list.” But I tend to think that at any given time, most people have one song that they’re playing over and over.

For me, that song right now is “I Will Wait” by Mumford & Sons. But I’d really like to know your answer to that question. What’s your favorite song right now? Pick one song. (This is a skill, to pick only one. You can do it.)

  1. I’m a little ashamed that it’s not something more trendy or indie, but I’ve had “Some Nights” by Fun stuck in my head for about 3 months.

  2. It changes for me. Sometimes daily. And sometimes the same song will have different meanings for me. For example, somewhat recently I’d been listening to the “Era Vulgaris” album by Queens of the Stone Age. The opening track, “Turning on the Screw” can be a somewhat detached sense of amusement when I’m in a good, empowered mood, and that same song in a less than manic state represents my feeling conflicted and confused by the chaos all around me. Music is a delightfully subjective thing in that way, but I think I’m getting a little esoteric here.

Favorites are difficult to nail down for those reasons, so I’ll give you the next best thing, a song that always puts a smile on my face, which is to say “Crescendolls” by Daft Punk. I’m not a huge electronica fan by any means, but this song is catchy, and infectiously positive.

  3. Uprise by Muse. You didn’t say that the reason had to be short.
Melodic, with an excellent baseline. Frontman’s voice is spellbinding.
The lyrics are infectious and uplifting yet alternative. And the fossi pop feel is so cool.
“They will not force us…..we will be victorious!

  4. The Dave Glover Show is an afternoon drive-time show here in STL that (by it’s time slot) most people only catch for ~30 min, and probably 1/3+ of that is commercials/news. But with the most recent iOS update I can listen to this without plugging into my computer to update the podcast list every day, on the fly, commercial-free. That is my favorite thing to listen to right now.

  5. Now that I’ve gotten home and had the chance to listen to these songs, I have to say that your recommendations are FANTASTIC. Thank you! I’ll ask this question again in a few months.

    • Yes! I’m completely ashamed to say that I first heard this on that commercial for Internet Explorer, but it made me stop what I was doing and think, “I need to figure out what this song is right now.” Well done, internet. You win this time.

  6. “Goodbye Kiss” by Grace Potter and the Nocturnals popped up on my iPod the other day, and I’d forgotten how much I liked it! I’ve been listening to it a lot since then.

  7. One more… Morning Lullabies by Ingrid Michaelson. Super hard to find (can’t listen to it on iTunes or Spotify, but it’s on YouTube), but one of the most beautiful songs I’ve ever heard. Can’t stop humming it. 🙂
