The Day My Body Said, “Oh No You Don’t”

20141115_094143I had a very weird experience on Sunday.

On Saturday I ran an all-day event for my business. It actually started on Friday night, when I entertained and hosted a few of the out-of-towners, followed by about 5 hours of sleep (it should have been more, but I did that thing where I kept waking up thinking I had missed my alarm), followed by 15 straight ours of complete extroversion (I’m an introvert).

I tried to stay hydrated and well-fed throughout the day, but I may not have achieved that goal.

I woke up on Sunday morning at 8:30 and did as anyone would do after working 15 hours of work on a Saturday: I went back to work.

Then, about 2 hours into work, it was like my body slapped me in the face. “Baby Jamey,” it said, “you better get back in bed right now and not get up until I tell you to.”

I’m not one to sleep in, and as much as I love naps, I haven’t taken one in a while. But Sunday was different. I was out. My head hurt and my stomach ached. I got up around 2:00 to eat a little bit, and then I went back to bed again. I finally woke up around 6:00 to eat a proper dinner and work for a few hours before falling asleep at a normal hour.

The only times I’ve ever done anything like that were severe hangovers (I didn’t have an ounce of alcohol on Saturday) and when I returned from after my junior year abroad (I think I slept almost 20 hours straight).

Have you ever done this? Has your body ever said, “Get in bed!”, and when you woke up, you felt like a new man/woman?

  1. Running 31 hour LAN parties for the community did it for me. I started to get chills and cold symptoms that festered until finally I just had to go bed upon as the event wound up. Spending so much time “on” even with a few hours sleep was too much. You can push yourself, but even your limits have limits!

  2. It happens every day once you’re really hooked on opium. But that’s another story for another day. Today’s question is, why does your body call itself “Baby Jamey”?

    • Trev: Ha ha, well said. Usually my body does not refer to itself as Baby Jamey, but given how I felt on Sunday, that was what it called me.
