If You Know This Book, You Win

I don’t know why this book popped into my head today, but I haven’t been able to figure it out, and I hope you can help.

When I was in fourth grade, I read a book written at the same level of (and in the same style as) books like The Phantom Tollbooth and Roald Dahl’s books.

It’s a light fantasy book about–as far as I can recall–a village that has lived in peace for a long time. One day, the main character (a boy, I think), is walking along the edge of the village, which is protected by miles and miles of solid-stone mountains.

The boy hears a tapping sound inside the mountain, the sound of someone digging. I think at some point he also hears singing, and he even sees some of the creatures who are trying to dig through (they are not friendly).

And…that’s it. That’s all I can remember. I have no idea why this came to mind, other than maybe I was thinking about cooperative games and I thought the book might lead to a neat cooperative game concept.

If you have any idea of what this book might be, please let me know!
