The Upstairs Neighbor

Have you ever had an upstairs neighbor who makes the strangest sounds?

My walls are pretty thick, so I don’t here much. But recently in the evenings, something has been going on in the unit above mine that makes the entire condo shake. It’s not consistent, like rowdy sex–it’s more like THUNK THUNK THUNK long pause THUNK THUNK THUNK. What is that?

My best guess some sort of self-improvement, at-home exercise like Crossfit or P90x. But what if it’s something way more interesting?

As I started to think of what it could be, I remembered watching this amazing video about the art form of the upstairs neighbor. Be warned–while the video is work-friendly, it’s also laugh-out-loud hilarious. I absolutely lose it when the lady drops the chains on the wood floors. Here are some of my favorite lines, followed by the video:

  • “We want the sounds to be different…but completely unrecognizable.”
  • “Their ceiling is our stage, and we’re dancing across it!”
  • “We take shifts to create the illusion that nobody here sleeps.”

What’s the oddest thing you’ve ever heard from an upstairs neighbor?

  1. Your walls are not that thick. Remember that one time you have to explain to your cats how human cubs are made when your next door neighbors were doing some noisy human activities?

I used to live under some people who like to move their furniture at night. That was fun… for them.

  2. That’s true, I did have to teach the cats about the birds and the bees…though even then my walls held up pretty well. My ceiling is quite solid–I once had a neighbor with a drum set, and I never heard it.

  3. At my old apartment I’m pretty sure the upstairs neighbors were practicing their roller derby skills sometimes, as I would randomly hear what could only be skate wheels (or maybe a rolling chair) moving across the hardwood floors, followed by crashes and bangs.

  4. You never heard the drum set and heard that!? What are they doing upstairs? Is Han Solo your neighbor? Maybe it’s the muffled sounds of laser pistols going off because of your awesomely thick ceiling and walls.

  5. This video is outstanding. It actually made me miss the college days where our upstairs neighbor had to be about to win a world championship DDR competition.
