What Did You Do on Friday Nights in High School?

boymeetsworldIn a conversation with a few friends last week, we were reminiscing about the things we did in high school. I’m not quite sure how it came up, but someone posed the question about what they did on Friday nights back then.

I’m sure there are many high schoolers out there who spend Friday nights doing the types of things teenagers do in movies: partying, drinking, capers, shenanigans, etc. One of the people in the conversation said they played pool at a local billiard hall, and another person said they hung out at teen center in their hometown.

I’m sure I spent some Friday nights playing games with friends, but the thing I’m sure I did the most often was, admittedly, watching TGIF.

If you were the type of person who stayed home on Friday nights in the ’90s, you probably know about TGIF. It was a lineup of TV shows that included Family Matters, Step by Step, and my favorite, Boy Meets World.

Looking back, I have no idea why these shows were the main attraction for my Friday nights. The were serviceable, but I don’t think they were particularly good TV. Maybe they were just a nice way to unwind after a long week of school, homework, and soccer.

How did you spend your Friday nights in high school? Do you wish you had spent them differently?

  1. Ahhhh…90’s TV shows. I spent many Friday nights watching the same shows. The only other thing I can specifically remember doing would be going to football, basketball and soccer games.

  2. Id have to say it changed through highschool. For freshman and sophomore years, tgif all the way, and Snick on Saturdays to boot. The shows were a great way to relax and just veg out, destress, and hang with the family.

But by the end of sophomore year i became friends with a group of gamers. Primarily roleplayers, one of them had even created their own game. This concwpt was new to me and We gave it a shot and then pretty much got hooked. So most fridays were spent not in front of the tv but distant planets, in difficult treaty negotiations, and on the front lines of planetary bedlam.

Although as you can guess we were not the most “popular kids”. I will say we all felt like the lucky ones since rather than hitting the mall on a friday we traveled to another world. =)

Differently, probably the only thing I would have done differently is study physics more, didnt get the most amazing grade in that during senior year =p
