My Favorite Songs of 2016

Last year was the year of random song discoveries, but this year was all about albums. Some of my favorite musicians released great albums this year: BORNS, Frightened Rabbit, and Lucius combine to hold 9 out of the 17 slots on this year’s list. Also, Kyle Morton, lead singer of my favorite band, Typhoon, released a pretty solid solo album.

Of course, there are still some random/topical songs for 2016: Stand By Me hooked me through a video game trailer, Alexander Hamilton is fantastic, Want to Want Me has a super sexy Lip Sync Battle rendition, and the Mannequin Challange phenomenon carried Black Beatles onto the list.

Even though I don’t listen to music all that often (I work in complete silence), I love these songs, and I’d recommend all of them. If you need to pick just a few to check out, go with the three Frightened Rabbit songs. They encapsulate my favorite type of music.

What are some of your favorite songs of 2016? How did you discover them?

Here’s my list from last year.

  1. Even though my song is from 2014, I discovered it this year. The song is “On the Frame” by Beta Radio. I found it on an “Afternoon Acoustic” mix on Spotify. Since then, I’ve been turned onto their band and they are great.
