What’s the Age of Your Oldest Pet?

My wonderful cat, Biddy, turned 10 today. 10 years old! I’m so proud of him.

I adopted Biddy from a rescue shelter when he was just a few weeks old, and it’s been amazing to watch him grow up. He’s had a rough couple of years due to his diabetes, but he’s endured, and just this week I got the news from his vet that the diabetes is in remission. I’m sure Biddy will enjoy not being poked with a syringe twice a day if/when that day comes.

To celebrate his birthday, I baked him a cookie:

Just kidding! Cats can’t eat cookies. I let him smell my cookie, and then I let him resume his position on my chair while I stood and worked:

I did give him a little extra food today and access to all of his toys. Oh, and his cousins (my niece and nephew) sang “happy birthday” to him over Facetime. He was not amused…but I think he had a good day. Happy birthday, Biddy!

What’s the age of your oldest pet, past or present?

  1. February 23 is our dog Carly’s birthday too! She is 4. Unfortunately we had to leave her with a sitter while we went to a board game convention all weekend. But, luckily she has no clue it is her birthday of course so we can celebrate when we get home. 🙂

My previous dog Fuzzy I had for 11 1/2 years.

  2. We have had our dog Dixie for 10 years now, she was a rescue from a shelter. We don’t know how old she is, the people at the shelter estimated she was 2 years old when we picked her up. Wonderful dog that loves everyone. Happy B-day Biddy!

  3. I have two parakeets and the oldest, Pippin, will be 9 later this year, which is evidently geriatric. When it gets dark at night, he tends to squawk at his cage mate (Frodo). My theory is he can’t see well at night any more, and any sort of movement nearby freaks him out.

    • Julia: I was curious about this one, as I have no idea how old birds live to be. I’m glad Pippin (and Frodo) have lived so long!

  4. Jamey,

I’ve never had a pet (having grown up with two younger brothers), so I’ll simply say, “Happy Birthday, Biddy!”

    Cheers,
    Joe

  5. Happy Birthday Biddy! Sheeba will be 15 next week ( maybe she already is – the vet said mid-February to mid- march when she was rescued) Growing up, I had a dog who lived to be 17.

  6. Jamey, that’s great to hear Biddy’s diabetes is in remission! I’ve had a couple cats with diabetes and it’s awful to watch them deteriorate. Biddy’s truly a lucky cat….hope he lives another 10 years!

  7. Happy birthday, Biddy! Gershwin and Voltaire are both 7, Brahms is 6, Rousseau is 1, and Apollo is 5 months. My first cat lived to be 19, so hopefully you and Biddy (and Walter!) have many more years left together.

  8. My friends have a cat that just turned 20 a few days ago. 🙂 So Biddy is just a young man in comparison. 🙂
