What’s the Best Sandwich You’ve Ever Eaten?

I had an incredibly luck streak of delicious sandwiches this week.

It started with The Gramophone on Tuesday. I took a gamble and tried one of their specials, a taco salad sandwich on toasted sesame bread. It was everything I’ve ever wanted in a taco dressed up as a sandwich.

On Wednesday I went to lunch at Layla’s. Does a burger count as a sandwich? I’m going to say it does. I had their Buffalo Bill burger, which combines bison with smoked poblano peppers and crispy chips on a pretzel bun. SO GOOD.

Both of these sandwiches were big enough to last 2 meals, so by the time it was Friday, I had eaten a total of 4 amazing sandwich-based meals. It didn’t even occur to me that a fifth sandwich could continue the streak.

But then I walked into Adam’s Smokehouse and was introduced to the Montreal smoked beef sandwich. It was the simplest sandwich of the week: thin-sliced corned beef served on marbled rye from Vitale’s Bakery with a touch of cranberry BBQ sauce.

I’ve had corned beef many times, but never like this. It melted in my mouth without any of the gristle I’ve come to associate with that type of meat. And the bread…the bread was amazing. A good slice of bread can take an ordinary sandwich to the next level. It was so good that I asked the owner where they got the bread so I could acquire some for myself.

Like the other sandwiches, this one lasted two meals as well, so I ended up having 6 superb sandwiches in a row. They said it couldn’t be done, but it really happened. I couldn’t have done it without my teammates–they kept me going even when I was down to my last bite.

Like DiMaggio’s hitting streak, a sandwich streak like this will probably never be replicated. I’m just grateful I was able to be a part of it.

  1. Burgers 100% count as a sandwich. Don’t let anyone tell you they’re not. (Also, hot dogs are a sandwich, but that’s for another discussion.)

I’m pretty jealous of your week of sandwiches! The taco salad sandwich sounds really interesting.

I work in a sandwich shop, so my extracurricular sandwiching is pretty minimal. Though I remember having an amazing sandwich at Zingerman’s Deli in Ann Arbor, MI… even though I don’t quite remember what it was.

I’d say that the best sandwich I’ve ever eaten is actually one of my own home creations. Boar’s Head cracked pepper turkey, hard salami, smoked gouda, green leaf lettuce & sprouts, whole grain mustard, poppy seed kaiser roll.

    Welp, now I’m hungry again.

    • Zingerman’s has some of the best known sandwiches known to man. My wife, Mira, grew up in Ann Arbor and we love getting their deli catalogs just to drool over what they have to offer…

    • I’ve read about Zingerman’s (they’re known for great customer service), but I’ve never had the chance to eat there. That creation of yours sounds excellent! I may need to embark on a week of homemade sandwiches. 🙂

  2. Mmmmm, that corned beef sandwich on marbled rye looks amazing! And I’m not even sure I like corned beef, but I still want to eat it. 🙂 I may need to take a trip down to Adam’s Smokehouse to try that sandwich for myself.

I’m a sucker for a fancy grilled cheese– one with at least 2 types of cheese (munster and cheddar is a good combination), and on a hearty bread.
