Would You Vacation in a Star Wars Westworld-Style Resort?

This weekend, Disney announced that the Star Wars resort they’re building in Florida will combine “a luxury resort with an immersion in an authentic Star Wars environment.” Go on…

I know a lot of people have fun going to amusement parks, but I have to admit that they’ve never really excited me. In fact, one of my deepest regrets as a child was acting petulantly one spring break when my parents treated us to a trip to Disney World and Epcot, primarily because it literally did not occur to me that the destination was a gift to us kids (an expensive one at that, especially since we were not at all wealthy).

But then I read this on Slashfilm today:

“Guests can experience a multi-day adventure in space, and the planets that populate the Star Wars universe, and become an “active citizen of the galaxy” complete with “proper attire” provided to them. You will “board a starship alive with stories and adventures.”

Woah. You’re telling me that I can live in a fully immersive Star Wars world for a few days? It sounds like all the best parts of Westworld, but in space. I can drive 30 minutes and be in a place that feels like Westworld. I cannot say the same for my ability to board an Imperial armada.

Count me in.

I’m legitimately excited about this in a way I never thought I’d be about an amusement park. It combines me love of Star Wars with my love of games, and it sounds like it will provide an unforgettable, otherworldly experience. I’ve love to do it with a few friends, though it seems like a pretty awesome way to make some new friends too.

Here’s how Bob Chapek, Chairman of Walt Disney Parks & Resorts, sums up the experience:

“It’s unlike anything that exists today.” Bob said. “From the second you arrive, you will become a part of a Star Wars story! You’ll immediately become a citizen of the galaxy and experience all that entails, including dressing up in the proper attire. Once you leave Earth, you will discover a starship alive with characters, stories, and adventures that unfold all around you. It is 100% immersive, and the story will touch every single minute of your day, and it will culminate in a unique journey for every person who visits.”

I want to go to there.

Is this something that excites you too? If you could pick any other fictional universe to fully immerse yourself in for a few days, what would it be? I’m thinking Lord of the Rings…or Scythe. 🙂

  1. It’s already a Disney property so they could easily add this to their resort empire… an immersive experience for TRON. The visual look of the world, the video game gladiator philosophy behind much of the films and the chance to either dutifully serve the MCP (or other digital overlord) or rebel against that control, would make for a very cool, fun and impressive visit. Most importantly… the light cycles! With the VR technology available and thrill rides that could be the backbone for it all, visitors could zip around, feeling the sensation of riding the classic bike that many have always wanted to experience.

  2. Jamey,

While we’re about a decade different in age, we share the same thing in common…a less than high regard for the standard amusement park. But, this place sounds amazing! I would get really excited to be immersed in this environment.

    Cheers,
    Joe
