Pet Please #152: Cats Carrying Toys in Their Mouths

I wish so badly I had a photo of Biddy doing this, but I’ve never caught him in the act.

Every now and then, I’ll look up to see Biddy trotting into the room with a toy in his mouth. He’ll drop it triumphantly at my feet. Sometimes its his bell toy, sometimes his bug toy, and often a rubber band or hair tie.

It really is one of my favorite things when he does this. I’m not sure why–where else would he carry it?–but it’s incredibly endearing. Especially when he actually transports it from one place to another, not just momentarily chewing on it. The transport shows intent and purpose.

Dogs do this too, and it’s cute, but almost expected. There’s just something special and rare when a cat does it (though there are cats who do it much more often than others).

Because I don’t have a photo of Biddy doing this–yet–I’ll post a few photos I found online of other cats. If your animal has ever done this on camera, please share a link in the comments!

  1. Being a dog, Sheeba carries things ( or used to carry) on a semi regular basis. What I wish I had a video of was when she would clean up her toys. For her first couple of years when I would tell her it was time to clean up, she would pick up get toys and put them back in the basket. ( she tended to pull everything out every day). Then she would pick up her baby ( a barey stuffed pig ) and take it to her bed. Alas, that was almost 16 years ago and I don’t have a video of it. While these days, she prefers toys with intact squeakers, every now and then intel her to get her baby and she finds her pig.

  2. I’ll have to try to get a picture of it but when I come home from work one of my dogs usually grabs her big chew bone and trots around me showing it off as a way of greeting me. She feels so proud, it’s really adorable!

  3. I got a couple great pics of my toy (and beer bottle) carrying cats! And videos of cat a playing fetch, walking on a treadmill, chewing on a dog bone, and (I just had to record the hilarity) one of my boy cats fondling his dipstick (yes he was fixed).

Here is Darth Smudgie will a crinkle toy in his mouth watching birdies or high school kids. Both were desired prey.
