7 Books I’ve Pre-Ordered for 2018

I use a Kindle as my primary reading device, and one of my favorite things is getting an alert that a book I pre-ordered months ago has arrived on my Kindle.

But…one of my other favorite things is anticipating what’s coming. So tonight I took a look at my pre-ordered books. Here’s what I found:

  • Head On by John Scalzi (April 17)
  • Only Human by Sylvain Neuvel (May 1)
  • A Reaper at the Gates by Sabaa Tahir (June 12)
  • Age of War by Michael J. Sullivan (July 3)
  • Record of a Spaceborn Few by Becky Chambers (July 24)
  • Dark Age by Pierce Brown (September 11)
  • The Consuming Fire by John Scalzi (October 16)

Now, every single one of these books is part of a series. Along the way I’m hoping to discover some new books, and it’s always great to see when one of my favorite authors releases a new book that I didn’t know about.

The good news is that if you’re looking to get into a new series, these are all preceded by some fantastic books that you could start reading now. There are only two fantasy novels among them (A Reaper at the Gates and Age of War), though I just started the Lightbringer series, so that may change. The rest are sci-fi. It’s hard to recommend one over another, because they’re all excellent.

Are you familiar with any of these series? Which 2018 book releases are you excited about?

  2. Jamey,

I have to say, I haven’t heard of any of these authors, but my appetite for other-than-historical titles has waned quite a bit in the last 20 years. Then, I devoured fantasy novels such as R.A. Salvatore’s series (Homeland, Exile, and Sojourn) or the creative minds of Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman (The Dragonlance Chronicles), and even most recently the entirety of The Game of Thrones. Now, however, I’m reading several wonderful biographies, including Einstein by Walter Isaacson and Hamilton by Ron Chernow. Sadly, my limited time for reading is almost exclusively dedicated to Foreign Affairs these days.

    Cheers,
    Joe

  3. John Scalzi FTW! One of my favourite authors and he seems like a genuinely good guy too. His blog is always an interesting read.

  4. I don’t usually preorder books unless they’re part of a series, too. Looking at my Amazon account, right now I have open orders for:

The Invasion by Peadar O’Guilin 2/2
Hollywood Dead by Richard Kadrey 10/?

Wow, that’s all. I really thought I would have more than that.
