Have You Ever Used Flirtation as a Tool? (Survivor-related post)

This is the latest installment in my series of blog posts counting down to when I attend the Survivor season finale in December. I’m still so excited!

I watch Survivor every other Thursday–it’s easier for various friends to schedule it that way. So tonight we watched episodes 2 and 3. There aren’t any major spoilers below.

The biggest thing that stood out to me about these episodes was how many survivors are using flirtation as a tool, men and women alike. It’s partially a social game, so I applaud their creativity. As a viewer, I can see right through it, but in the moment I’m sure I would be falling for it and probably doing it myself (or trying, at least).

But it got me thinking: Have I ever used flirtation as a tool in real life? Beyond the various forms of romantic/sexual courtship, of course, and hopefully in a way that is respectful to the other person (i.e., if it’s unwanted in any way, you stop).

I’m sure I have, though I’m struggling to think of a specific example. That’s partially because I’ve been running my business as my full-time job for 5 years now, and in an industry where there are issues regarding how men treat women, I would never want to make any woman uncomfortable (men don’t have to worry about me flirting with them).

Before that, I worked with a lot of volunteers at my previous job (a non-profit), many of whom were older women. While I can’t think of a specific example, I’m sure I tried to use just a little bit of charm from time to time.

What about you? Have you ever used flirtation as a tool?

  1. Haha, this one made me laugh. I’ve never seen Survivor though. I was going to say ‘Never! I only flirt for fun!’ But actually I did use it as a technique when I worked in retail. If a customer was annoyed, like a transaction went wrong or something like that I would flirt a little during an awkward moment as a decoy, so they’d stop being annoyed at me! It…sometimes worked?
