What Do You Listen to During Short Drives?

Today on my Facebook Live chat, someone asked me what St. Louis radio stations I listen to. However, I barely had an answer, as I don’t think I’ve listened to the radio in years.

The main reason for this is that I rarely listen to anything when I’m driving. Long road trips are an exception–on a long road trip I’ll listen to podcasts and music. Occasionally I’ll talk on the phone.

But the majority of the time I spend in the car is for 5 to 10 minutes, and I drive in complete silence. Beyond focusing on the task at hand (driving safely from one place to another), I like that time to think, and sound gets in the way of that.

Though, in all honesty, if there were a seamless way to stop listening to a podcast at home (which I do frequently) and start listening to it at the same point in the car, I probably would do that more often.

  1. My phone syncs up to my car’s stereo via Bluetooth, so it does seamlessly pick up wherever I left off on whatever I was listening to. For short drives like my commute to and from work, I usually listen to podcasts like Imaginary Worlds (can usually complete an episode with one trip) or Levar Burton Reads (usually get through a story between my morning and afternoon commutes). What’s nice about when the podcast is split between commutes is that it gives me something to think about and look forward to at the end of the day so the trip home isn’t a slog but an enjoyable experience.

    • My iPhone does this, but I usually listen to podcasts in Chrome at home, and when I’m in the car, I have to hook up my phone to a tape deck. It’s a bit of a process. 🙂

  2. I *almost* wish I had a long commute so that I could listen to podcasts but in the 10-15 minutes it takes me to go to and from work, I just have my iPod hooked like dmvp. Since my favorite bands of the motherland don’t play on the radio here, I have to rely on my trusty iPod. 🙂

  3. If you ever branch into the world of St. Louis radio (which I often do on short drives) 90.7 is public radio and 88.1 is KDHX which is a local independent station so that’s who I like to support and listen to! I also sometimes knock a tiny bit out of an audiobook if it’s an easy one to pick up and put down so to speak.

  4. I keep my car tuned to NPR. Short drives usually mean I can hear a few short news stories, or a small piece of an interview. If it’s pledge drive time, I usually put on a podcast via Android Auto, which I usually have plugged into my stereo for traffic and navigation anyway.

  5. Jamey,

In Northern, VA I rarely have a short drive…I stop at the grocery on the way home from work (45-50 min) and my commute to work (at 6:30 a.m.) takes approximately 40 min, so I listen to a lot of podcasts. I can’t tell you the last time I only drove 5-10 min. Hahahaha!!!
