My Favorite Songs of 2018

As I compiled this year’s list, I loved seeing how the various songs triggered different memories and connections over the past year. I’ll mention a few of them below:

  • Typhoon, probably my favorite band, came to St. Louis earlier this year. I had a great time, though I had the chance to tell the lead singer how much I love the band, and I failed to say anything. Next time!
  • “Jet” is a song from an awesome scene in an otherwise lackluster show, Love.
  • Sadly, the lead singer of Frightened Rabbit, another of my favorite bands, passed away this year. It hit me much harder than I thought it would, and I went down the rabbit hole to find more songs of theirs. I found these two gems.
  • The last few songs are from movies I enjoyed this year: Crazy Rich Asians, A Star Is Born, and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.

What are your top 3 favorite songs you discovered this year, and how did you discover them?

Here’s last year’s list.

Oooh you like quite a few artists I haven’t heard before. I’ll listen to some! I’m curious to hear Typhoon. Hurt, Johnny Cash and The Pretenders though, yes. Mine were:

Billie Eilish, When the Party’s Over. I kept seeing images from her music video on my Instagram homepage, and I wanted to find out what all the fuss was about. I found this song and loved it.

Courtney Barnett, Pedestrian at Best. It started playing on my YouTube Premium based on other songs I’d been listening to. I just thought the lyrics and attitude was perfect.

Skrux, You and Me. Someone recommended this on Twitter when I said my daughter liked Skrillex (what she thinks of as ‘alien music’.) So we listened to this one and there’s not much to it, but it’s good for when I’m drawing and colouring, it’s really chilled.

    Happy New Year!

My new favorite band last year is “War on Drugs”. I can’t stop listening to them.

But now I’ve got to put on some music, otherwise I’ll have “Jet” stuck in my head for the rest of the day. Sorry, Paul, it’s not one of my faves.

Oh, and I saw the Pretenders last May! They put on a killer show. Unfortunately, I didn’t get a chance to meet Chrissy Hynde and fail to tell her she’s awesome.
